I stumbled onto this free podcasting service after reading Internet Marketing Today. So I thought I’d sign up and see how it works.
You can even conference in with other people and record an interview–OVER THE PHONE! I am just beside myself about this. Did I mention that it’s free? (They aren’t paying me or anything, I promise.) I just like stuff that’s free and helpful.
I don’t know how the subscription to the podcast part works. I’ll be looking into that soon if I decide I want to go this route. I suspect there is an RSS feed on the Gabcast site. I’ll try to drop it into my Shuffle (I’m too cheap for the fancier models). If I can do that, I’ll post some instructions here later.
One thing I’d like to do is record sample chapters and stories as audio files! Would that be cool? I could be a one-man audio lit mag. (Or I could get struck by lightning for hubris, whichever happens first.)
In this first podcast audio thingy, you’ll hear my “flabbergastment” that this service exists (for free!), then I talk a little bit about poetry and read a sample poem. I did this entire process from registration to recording to publishing in about 30 minutes.
So don’t expect anything worthy of an Oscar. But in the audio I talk briefly about poetry and read a sample poem “Outside Abilene.”
Gabcast! Good Word Editing #1 – Poetry Thoughts
I talk briefly about poetry and read a sample poem “Outside Abilene.”
Here’s the text of the poem:
Outside Abilene
The land less flat than I
guessed, it’s still hairy gray
with curly pubic oak
at the 33 miles to go sign
where that church boy fell asleep
and killed a family of four
on their way camping.Still alive, the land has its labors
pushing until the grain crowns
golden ripe for the combine,
elevated or spewed onto trains
running parallel to barbed wire
stretching between corrugated iron
posts that keep us company.A sign in the dry lake:
Please Jesus send rain
But Jesus hitched a ride
in the back of our truck
where the wind blows his dark hair
so wild no one sees him smile
except the dry prickly pear.

Well, it didn’t embed the cool audio player that it was supposed to. Darn. It’s still pretty cool–follow the link and you’re just a click away from hearing me talk to myself on the phone.
It’s like a long voice mail message to no one. Or maybe a few someones. We’ll see. The entire message is 2 minutes long.
But I’ll have to work on embedding that audio player.
Also, it seems to have done something really weird to my permanent link page. Hmmm. Perhaps you get what you pay for?
Or maybe I just have a few kinks to work out.
Mark — Pretty cool. I’ll be looking forward to more podcasts as you learn the process.
Always fun to put a voice with the face with the words and the personality. It all starts to make a whole, eventually.
Thanks, Charity. You should try it. I don’t think I’ll have any kind of regular podcast or anything, but it will be a fun way to read aloud to people.
Maybe I’ll talk about Hopkins next. Cool.
