The Best Promotional Book Video I’ve Ever Seen

by Marcus on January 26, 2007

Earlier this week, I sent people to Wayne Batson’s promotional video for his fantasy trilogy, The Door Within.

Today my friend Al Hsu, directed me to . . .

Dave Zimmerman’s promotional video for Comic Book Character.

It is the best book promo video I’ve ever seen. But I already said that in the title. (Be warned, it’s about ten minutes long.) But the end is worth the wait, you’ll see Al himself speak to the camera about Zimmer-Man with manly admiration.

The interesting thing is that the video has some very serious things to say. Zimmer-Man’s super power belt contains books of theology and paper clips and red pens—all the normal tools of the trade. It’s silliness, of course, but it’s also a good reminder that a Christian’s ordinary life is super-powered by the Spirit of God.

Here’s another way to say it: Our daily work is a high calling. (And if you hurry over to TheHighCalling.org, you’ll see Al’s article about an old-school superhero, a special radio message that is close to my heart, and our first article by Image Journal editor, Greg Wolfe.)
(I haven’t read Dave’s book, but I am itching to now.)

Okay, I watched. Very humorous! And I liked the thought that comics have the human “universal sense of [the need] for justice.” (It’s like C.S. Lewis goes comic!)

Anyway, I just have two questions. Who was that blond on the conveyor belt, and does everyone at IVP have a secret pair of red tights?

For a book promotional video to be the best ever, you’d think it would need to generate some book sales . . .

The blond on the conveyor belt is IVP employee Holly Who Would Not Want Her Last Name Mentioned. They wouldn’t be secret red tights if I told you, now would they?

Me? I wanted to know who the masked villains were. I think that says something about the difference between us, L.L.

You’re a secret red tights kind of person.
I’m a black mask kind of person.

Dave, well bummer that it didn’t sell more. It’s still in print right?

Watching the video I was hoping that I could embed it in my blog. No luck. Maybe the problem wasn’t that the video wasn’t good promotion but that it didn’t get to your potential readers?

Definitely, this is one for a blog network to promote. Hmmm. I might have one of those up my sleeve soon. Wanna be our guinea pig?

Hey, where’s my pair of red tights!

I believe you’ve hit upon something quite accurate, Mark. I like secrets. Not surprising, I guess that my book is (currently) called Secrets in Stone!

Marcus:

Ummm . . . yes? Definitely? Still in print, just awaiting your marketing genius.

Stacy, only you can answer that question, hon.

L. L. , ooooh, nice working title!

Dave, hold on there, Tex. I’m hardly a genius. More like someone trying to build an airplane while he’s flying. (If indeed I’m not delusional about flying at all!)

Also, everyone should know that the blog network is still a few weeks away. We’ll probably launch a beta version for members of TheHighCalling.org in mid to late February (by invitation only).

Then I hope to go full speed ahead in mid to late March.

All deadlines subject to change, of course. But that’s the plan. We’re hard at work building it all right now.
