Last week, I began a four part review of Mary DeMuth’s book Authentic Parenting in a Postmodern World. I talked about the great stories she tells in her book, but that’s only part of what I liked.
She offers parents practical resources (like SoulPerSuit, more on that later) and practical tips.
In fact, at one point in the book, I wrote in the margin, “I need to try this with Lyle.” Her tips were so applicable and engaging that they called me to action. They called me to change something about the way I interact with my kids.
Don’t get me wrong. This is not some Joel Olsteen-esque—Your Best Parenting Now kind of book. But Mary is not above expressing herself in bullets and lists.
And everyone loves a good top ten list. At least I do.
Her best list of tips, by the way, comes in chapter 9. These twelve pages are worth the cost of the book, in my opinion.
After a short introduction, she presents the reader with “ten ways to bring art into your family.” First item on the list is SoulPerSuit, a web site I can’t wait to explore. Apparently, they structure Bible studies around artistic response. And, um, a deck of cards.
When I went to check out the site, what do I find but the work of my friends L. L. and Charity! So maybe they can explain a little about how the process worked for them and for their kids. (That’s as close as I get to begging for comments from you, L.L. and Charity.)
Also, and this gender question is for anyone, do any men participate in SoulPerSuit?
According to their blog, they are just now starting a study of Esther. People will be sharing their first creative response on Sunday apparently.
And remember, if you think SoulPerSuit is cool, chances are you’ll think Mary’s book is cool too. (The converse isn’t true, though. If you are a little confused by SoulPerSuit, you won’t necessarily be confused by Mary’s book.) Clearly this post is degrading fast.
Other people this week are featuring Mary’s book, if you want to see their thoughts. (This is a different set than last week.)

Yes, men participate. And they should. It’s such a cool way to study the bible!
Thanks for the heads up. I'll check on Mary's book and might review it as well.
