Just after the dawn of blogs in 2002, a secret cooperative of techie pastors and Bible scholars went into hiding to produce a new translation for the twenty-first century.
It’s the Geek Standard Version.
“We wanted to show that God’s truth applies just as well to the virtual world as it does to the actual world,” said one translator.
Although they have yet to find a publisher for their techie Scripture, they are not shy about sharing some of their favorite passages.
“Bloggers are always talking about link-love,” said another translator. “So we thought we would just play around with that idea.” Certainly some bible scholars will be skeptical of anyone playing around as they translate a holy text.
But their translation does cause one to rethink certain abstractions in 21st century terms. Like this one from 1 John:18-20:
There is no fear in link-love. But perfect linking drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect through linking.
We link because he first linked to us. If anyone says, “I link to God,” yet hates linking to his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not give link-love to his brother, whom he has seen, cannot give link-love to God, whom he has not seen.
(I blame L.L. for this bizarre post. See her comments on Work Space at Seedlings in Stone.)
