Mount Hermon Christian Writing Conference 2 - What I Learned

Here’s what I learned for March 14, 2008, of the Mount Hermon Christian Writing Conference.

The best thing I learned today has nothing to do with writing. During the newcomers orientation, Gayle Roeper talked about prayer. When you pray about the conference, she said, there are three ways to pray.

You can say the red wagon prayer. You know how these prayers are. A little kid decides one night that he wants a red wagon. So he prays, dear God please give me a red wagon. The kid knows God can do anything, so he really believes that red wagon is going to come in the morning. When he wakes up, the wagon isn’t there and the kid gets mad at God. Don’t pray for red wagons.

You can also pray: God, I’m doing this work for you, so I know you’re going to bless it. As if God is going to be fooled by our little verbal trickery. He won’t.

Or you can pray like Christ, not my will but yours be done.

And I thought about that. And thought about that. And thought. For Jesus God’s will was crucifixion. Marytrdom. And resurrection, of course! But death always comes before resurrection.

Can I pray that about my writing?

I don’t know.
