A White-Knuckle Topic - Genetics, Evolution, Creationism, and the Head of the Human Genome Project

A few months ago, I had the opportunity to interview Francis Collins for TheHighCalling.org. (You can read part one here.) Dr. Collins is the author of the New York Times hardback and paperback bestseller, The Language of God.

As far as I’m concerned, this book should be required reading for all Christians.

I don’t mean that necessarily as an endorsement of every proposal Collins raises–though I find many of his arguments persuasive. Mostly, I just think Francis Collins is a brilliant voice that should not be ignored. He should be engaged, debated, promoted, refuted, celebrated. Whatever. But not ignored.

And to be fair, you have to read his stuff to engage him. That means read the book before you knock it. Or respond to some of the interviews he’s done.

With that, I invite you to read the first part of our interview over at TheHighCalling.org: “Celebrating God Through Science.”

I’d love to get your feedback on the ideas Francis and I talked about. Leave a short comment below, or discuss the interview back at your own blog and direct us to your post in the comments below.

(In the meantime, enjoy this clip from the Colbert Report aired just after the book came out.)

To answer your question over on Seedlings, no, not too early in the week for humor of the sort you mention. And I was feeling humorous myself and have thus tagged you with something you could take seriously but which I, dear friend, only partly did…

Very humorous clip, though I could see how it might offend some people. I liked the spirit of Collins.

L.L., I responded to your meme today.

Shep, the book really is amazing, you know? We’re posting the interview in two parts, so be sure to come back in two weeks. : )

Brandon, great to hear from you! Let us know what you think of the interview after you take a look.

Marcus,

Read the interview and loved it! Great questions on your part, I felt as though you asked questions designed to both explain Dr. Collins work and faith, and also to probe to some of the “perceived” conflict between science and faith.

And Dr. Collins’ answers were reasoned and honest. He put voice to positions I’ve long held, but have been hard-pressed to really drill into and explain. I am certainly checking out his book.

Nice work!

Marcus, thought you might be interested in this current conversation regarding Language of God (perhaps you’ve already dropped in there?) As I was reading, your thought-provoking interview came to mind…

You’re welcome, Ann. Speaking of white knuckles. I always comment at Jesus Creed with great fear and trembling!
