High Calling Blogger, Rick of Concept 53 posted a really interesting narrative explain what it looks like for him to join the community and begin interacting with folks.
You know, so much of the social media talk about community building gets sidetracked on techie tools. Google Friend Connect, Facebook vs. MySpace, Twitter (and TweetDeck and Twirl and all the other stuff), comments and comment engines like Disqus, search engines and services like Lijit.
But none of that is really social media. Those are just the tools of listening. Kudos to Rick for keeping the conversation about people and relationships without getting overly distracted by gadgets.

Too much of that stuff is on the surface or tangential to actual relationships or about “look at me”. Often a braying horn or clanging gong.
I have given up on the “social media” services (but I am a self described Social Mediot) and look for less but deeper connectivity through these type of activities.
Social Mediots! That is classic. A big problem with social media is
the self-promotion craziness. Someone thinks just because I give them
permission to email me, I am suddenly their best pal and so, of
course, I want to hear every sales pitch possible.
On the other hand, I don't want to throw out the baby with the bath
water. Being from a small town, I have to go online to find people who
share my interests in poetry, zombies, and German festivals.
what's Press This Button?
It's a bookmarklet you can add to your browser in Firefox or Safari.
Probably Explorer too. You can see a short video about it here on the
wordpress codex<http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2008/08/14/press-this-bookmarklet/>
.
It is a handy little tool – I just used it for the first time the other day.
