6 Characteristics of Blogs That Move Serious Traffic

by Marcus on May 25, 2007

Astounding magazineThe top five referring blogs sent us 64% of all the traffic from blogs. Although that’s a lot, our traffic flow was much more evenly distributed than the 80/20 rule you sometimes hear.

So I thought I would just describe some of the common things I noticed in these top 5 blogs.

I don’t know whether these should be guidelines for good blogging or not. They may be coincidences. They may have nothing to do with the sending traffic. They are simply observations that I found interesting.

  • Each of the top referring blogs posted only once about TheHighCalling.org.
  • Not one of the top referring blogs engaged in comments about their post—either on their blog or any other blog on the tour. That was surprising to me.
  • They all had a google PageRank of 4 or 5. Two of the three blogs with PageRank 5 sent us 50% of all the traffic from blogs. (And one blog with a PageRank 5 didn’t send much traffic at all–because of the way he posted, I think.)
  • They all had a relatively high tech rank (52,000 and higher).
  • Their Technorati Authority was all over the map. One top referring blog had a low Tech Authority of 83. Interestingly, the two blogs with the highest Technorati Authority ranking sent us only 2.7% of all the blog traffic. That is really odd because Tech Authority was a high predictor otherwise.
  • Three of the five were pastors.

Interesting.

Only one more post until the big revelation.

The formula that predicts a blog’s potential to send traffic.

You’re not going to post from the plane, are you? :)

No, silly. It’s in the cue. That’s the wonder of Wordpress and only one of the many reasons why you should leave the darkside of blogger and use the good side of the force with us WP geeks.

Sounds way too organized.

That’s just the blogger darkness talking.

Mark — This is so fascinating. And also makes me think I’ll never be asked to be part of a blog tour again. I did it all wrong. However, I am learning! The only thing I probably won’t be able to do before a future blog tour is to become a pastor!

Have a good trip.

So are you comments queued up too, and we’re really just talking with an automated system?

Thinking about PageRank and Technorati Authority in some ways stresses me out. Am I now trying to win the approval of God or of PageRank? Or am I trying to please Technorati? If I were still trying to please the ranking gods, I would not focused on my actual writing.

(what’s that, both Mark and Craver are going out of town this weekend?)
